The Yucatan peninsula is south-east of Mexico and comprises the states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche. The peninsula includes several nature reserves that maintain a large number of animal and plant species. Here you will find beautiful beaches with turquoise water and white sand, but also archaeological sites of the ancient Maya country.

Circuit Yucatan peninsula

Cancun Airport :

We arrived at the Cancun airport, which welcome every year more than 16 million passengers. It is located a few minutes from the beaches where for example the Club Med.

We will spend a night in a hotel before starting our tour in the Yucatan Peninsula.


Cancun :

A city known mainly for its mass tourism. Divided into two parts, a strip of land 23 kilometers between the Caribbean Sea and the lagoon where its concentrate the tourist hotels and activities and within the local population and institutions. Beautiful sandy beaches like club med for example, but with a very important tourist density.

After this brief stop with a night at the hotel.

The next on the way to Bacalar Lagoon with the passage stop in Tulum.



Tulum :

An ancient Mayan city overlooking the turquoise waters with white sandy beach for swimming. This archaeological site has many relics and a cenote, cenotes are natural wells of fresh water. All surrounded by a protective wall.



Bacalar Lagoon :

Arrival at the Bacalar Lagoon in the afternoon and accommodation in the heart of this haven of peace in an ecolodge.

This ecotourism paradise invite us to discover the next morning with a hike in the surrounding forest with a local guide and understand its ecosystem.
In the afternoon, we will discover the lagoon and its mangrove canoe.

Now, for lovers of sunrise in the morning on the dock of the lagoon, it's magic. Life starts and some birds come to you, curious to see a human presence so early. This is the best time to go kayaking observed birds in the lagoon.

At night, brief trip to Bacalar, located a few kilometers away from the lagoon. Back to the ecolodge for dinner.

The next day departure to Calakmul.



Bacalar :

Town overlooking the Caribbean Sea, with its fortress San Felipe Bacalar. You can taste the famous corncob seasoned pepper that sometimes sell itinerant traders.



Calakmul :

A Maya archaeological site with the second highest pyramid in Mexico.
This site is located in a jungle classified Biosphere reserve since 1989 by UNESCO since 2002. You can access it by about 50 kilometers through the jungle road.
From the car park, a hiking route is signposted to discover these remains, and climb the pyramids in the tropical heat.



Escarcega :

After the visit of Calakmul, we will stop in Escarcega. A city step to leave the next morning after a night at a hotel in the city. We also will taste the evening in a city restaurant of typical Mexican dishes.



Beach Gulf of Mexico :

We leave of Escarcega towards the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. We will stop for lunch at Champonton, a fishing village.



Campeche :

Campeche is a port city in the Spanish colonial period and has emerged in the late 16th century its first fortifications protected from attacks by sea.
It is a World Heritage by UNESCO since 1999. In the evening we will have dinner there in a restaurant where I discover a dish, "Arrachera" bull meat a sensational taste, then the bustling streets, we will drink a glass and we will be trapped by the name (Mexicanos cocktail), in fact, it's tequila with very hot pepper. I understand the smile of the server.
The night will be in a hotel within the walled city.



Becal :

In the morning, drive to Becal.
Becal is a village where the craftsmen manufactures the famous Panama hat. The expertise of artisans combined with the nature of the product design make it a must in Yucatan. The discovery of a workshop shows us how much work is of high quality. Of course, the Mexican hat is also manufactured there.
We will then continue to the Hacienda San Pedro Ochil for the visit and lunch.



Hacienda San Pedro Ochil :

The Hacienda San Pedro Ochil beautifully restored reflects the important economic role that the haciendas held until the 19th century. It is in these large properties that were being developed sisal fiber that was used to make ropes.
A pleasant visit to the hacienda followed by lunch, before taking the road to Uxmal.



Uxmal :

The pre-Columbian city of Uxmal was founded around the year 700 and had some 25,000 residents. Mayan buildings are arranged according to astronomical data. The site is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1996.



San Antonio Mulix :

We spend the night in the community of San Antonio Mulix which established an ecotourism center with small Mayan traditional houses. We have dinner around a table composed of regional dishes that will be cooked by the landlady.



Cenotes X-Batun and Dzombakal :

Early in the morning we enfourcherons ATVs and we will take the direction of the X-cenottes Batun and Dzombakal. We will make it a unique swim in the open pits resulting from a unique geological phenomenon in the world. We return for lunch in the village before continuing our journey to Mérida.



Mérida :

We take the direction of Merida, capital of Yucatan. A bustling city with many colonial buildings. The Municipal Palace, the Governor's Palace ... Many shady squares and a craft market. In the evening we will have dinner in a restaurant with a Mexican musical entertainment.



Tixkokob :

In the morning, short transfer to the village Tixkokob. It is a mecca for the making of the hammock. After visiting the village, towards the cenotes of Chunkanán.



Cenotes Chunkanan :

Late morning, we come to the ruins of the hacienda Chunkanán and departure on small "trucks" on rails pulled by mules, this mode of transport used for sisal at the time of the splendor of the haciendas. This course will introduce us to three cenotes in a sometimes dizzying underground environment. We continue after a picnic in the countryside to Izamal.



Izamal :

One of the most beautiful colonial cities of the Yucatán; Izamal is a place of pilgrimage and monastery San Antonio de Padua is the largest monastic complex of America. Izamal is also called the yellow town, referring to its colors.
We will spend the night in a hotel near the entrance of the convent.



Chichen Itza :

Very early departure for the site of Chichen Itza in order to avoid the high heat that prevails and also avoid the crowds attracted by this famous Yucatán site. Originally built by the Maya, it continued its rise with the Toltecs, before falling completely by the year 1440.
The site is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1988.
After lunch, departure for the island of Holbox, about 3 hours.



Holbox Island :

This small island inhabited mostly by fishermen is the ideal place to have the feeling of living in harmony with nature. Birds on the beach with white sand, mangrove ends of the island and also diving with whale sharks and watching flamingos at certain times of the year.
Two days on the island before taking the direction of another island Yucatan Isla Muredes.



Isla Muredes :

Another island that is this time very accessible from Cancun via a boat shuttle and very tourist. You can rent a golf cart to tour the island. It has a center for breeding sea turtles.
After a day on the island, it's back via the Cancun airport.
