Italy is at the center of the Mediterranean, with the Adriatic Sea to the east, the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, the Ionian Sea to the south and the Ligurian Sea in the northwest. It encompasses many islands, the main ones of Sicily and Sardinia. Covering an area of 301,300 km2, it forms a long boot 1360 km from north to south. Italy is separated from Africa by the Strait of Sicily. We find active volcanoes, such as Mount Vesuvius near Naples, Etna in Sicily and Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands.
