The total area of France is approximately 675,000 km² with Departments and Overseas Territories, which corresponds to the metropolitan France 551 500 km2 the overseas departments and 92 220 km² other territories 30904 m². This area does not include the Adelie Land, on which French sovereignty is disputed. It is the 42th largest state in the world by land area. Its population to 1 October 2015, according to estimates published by INED, is 67.1 million, of which 64.365 million in the metropolitan areas, 1.865 million in regions overseas as well as 876 000 in territories overseas and in New Caledonia.
